In cooperation with the Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Supply Chain Planning and Optimization firm Ab Ovo is undertaking a 4-year research project to bring self-organization to the intermodal chain. Walter Kusters, Director of Business Innovation at Ab Ovo and Researcher Jeroen Vester will offer a glimpse of the issues at stake during their joint workshop presentation at the Freight and Terminal Forum on March 28th 2019.
Technology is available to design an intermodal chain that doesn’t require human involvement (e.g. GPS, IoT, cloud or blockchain), but what business rules should be applied? How, when and what will the load communicate with the wagon, the train or with the destination terminal to ensure the optimal instructions are given for loading time, departure time and choice of the last mile truck.
Those are many questions yet to be answered! A lot of the business rules are now enforced by planners and their supporting planning systems.
