DB Schenker Rail Nederland (in the case study still referred to as Railion Netherlands) is part of DB Schenker Rail, the biggest rail freight company in Europe.
Train planning in rail cargo transport is a lengthy and iterative process, because infrastructure planning requires a detailed capacity planning in a very early stage. DB Schenker Rail Nederland needed a new planning system because (among others) the old system was intended for passenger transport and had very high maintenance costs.
Because of the new system the punctuality of the cargo trains within the Netherlands increased from 80% to more than 90%. The system was live within six months and the payback period was less than one year.
